How long should a compact digital camera last?

July 16, 2010 |11:29 | Digital Cameras  By : Team X

Last week, Executive Editor David Carnoy posted a poll about how long you should be able to use a smartphone without really needing to upgrade.

That was mostly about how many years you should get before your mobile device's technology is woefully outdated. With digital cameras, though, I'm more concerned with how long the thing will actually function.

My first compact digital camera was a 2-megapixel Nikon Coolpix 950 that I bought in 1999 for a little more than $800. That camera is still fully functioning.

Canon IXUS 130 review

July 7, 2010 |11:14 | Digital Cameras  By : Team X

Canon’s IXUS 130 is an incredibly stylish snapper, with rounded contours and the strong, sturdy build that characterises the IXUS range. It weighs under 135g and measures just 18mm at its thickest point, as well as being only 55mm tall and 90mm long – it’s small enough to fit into any pocket with minimal fuss.

Canon IXUS 130 review

Aiding that pocketability are the IXUS 130’s sleek lines, with almost none of the buttons protruding from its body. The only exception to this is the zoom control, which does stick out by a couple of millimetres at most. The overall feel is satisfying enough that one might entirely overlook the quality of the photos produced by it – it’s a fashion item, that’s for sure.

Canon IXUS 300 HS | Digital Camera Review | Introduction

Now and then a camera turns out to not only be designed stylishly, but also to be progressive in the technical sense. The Canon IXUS 300 HS is a 10 Megapixel camera with 3.8x optical zoom. So far, nothing much is revealed.
