LCD TV v LED TV - The facts

Posted in : Electronics

(added few years ago!)

An LCD TV is operated by a CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) at the back of the screen of which the brightness is usually between 330 and 350 cd/m2. The technology on board an LCD TV determines how the light is displayed and the more even and bright the light is the better the image quality. Pixels make up the LCD panel which are made up of 3 colours, red, blue and green and will either show black by totally blocking the pixels or show white by letting light through completely.

LCD TV v LED TV - The facts

An LED TV is yet to be manufactured. Some manufacturers falsely call their LCD TVs, LED, as they are LED backlit or edge lit meaning that they have a number of LED lights surrounding the LCD panel to further enhance the CCFL and therefore improves image quality by providing more light.

By using LED lights, less power is consumed which is a great benefit of such TVs and a great selling point too. However, TVs that use LED technology at present can be rather expensive, but with the outstanding quality of image that is displayed its worth the extra money if you have it lying around. For example the Samsung UE32B6000 LCD TV is backlit by LED's and has fantastic image enhancing technology on board. Similarly, the Sharp LC46LE600E LCD TV is also backlit with LED's.
